Case law from official public court records
of answers from two commercial legal AI research tools contained hallucinations in a 2024 Stanford RegLab and HAI study.
of court decisions have now dealt with filings that cited AI-invented cases, some with sanctions on the lawyers involved.
per user per month is a commonly reported price for large research platforms, usually on annual contracts (third-party estimates).
From your facts to matching precedent in three steps
No search syntax, no keyword guessing. Describe the matter the way you'd describe it to a colleague.
1. Upload or paste
PDF, Word or plain text: a complaint, petition, brief, or a few paragraphs of facts. Emails, phone numbers, SSNs and similar identifiers are redacted automatically.
2. Review the issues
We extract the facts, legal issues, statutes and jurisdiction. Edit anything before you search. This step is free.
3. Get ranked decisions
Similar cases with match %, outcome, pinpoint quotes, treatment signals and ready-to-copy citations. Export to Word.
Research you can verify, not just trust
A match % you can see inside
Facts 40 · Issues 30 · Statutes 15 · Jurisdiction 10 · Recency 5. See every part, and re-weight it to fit your matter.
No invented cases in results
Results come only from our database of real opinions. The AI explains matches; it can't add cases. Read the opinion before you rely on it.
Pinpoint quotes
The paragraphs that make each case relevant, so you can check them quickly, as ABA Formal Opinion 512 expects you to verify AI output.
Same-state first
Your jurisdiction ranks first, federal next. Filter to one state with one click; no out-of-state noise.
Outcome & treatment signals
Affirmed, reversed or remanded at a glance. See when later decisions cited, distinguished or overruled a case.
Confidential by design
Encrypted, US-hosted, never used for training. Auto-delete, PII redaction, and one-click deletion.
Everything a small firm needs, in one place
Fact-matched precedent is where LegiMatch starts. Around it: the everyday research tools a small firm needs.
Good-law flags
Red, yellow or green, based on how later decisions in our library treated the case, with the sentence that says so. A helper, not a full citator.
Brief check
Upload a brief: bad law, invented or mis-named citations, misquotes and wrong pin cites are flagged. Table of authorities included.
Terms & connectors
AND, OR, w/s, w/p, "phrases", root expanders, filters by court, judge, date, outcome and statute.
Alerts
New decisions similar to your matter, citing your key cases, or matching your searches, daily.
Matters & team
Client folders with notes and highlights; share with your firm as view-only or editable.
Judge analytics
How often a judge affirms or reverses, by practice area and procedural posture.
Statutes
Statute text from government sources, with the decisions in our library that cite the section.
Word add-in
Check citations and insert Bluebook cites while you draft in Word.
Research Librarian, 24/7
Ask for authority any time. It cites only real decisions and never gives legal advice; a person on our team can take over.
Quick answers in your pocket, at no cost
Every LegiMatch account keeps these free, even after the trial. No card needed.
Statute finder
Describe a topic and see the official sections of the U.S. Code and state codes that may apply, with the cases that cite them.
Keyword search
Terms and connectors (AND, OR, w/s, w/p) across the case library, with filters by court and date.
Citation checker
Paste a brief or an AI answer and see which case citations match real court opinions. Catch invented citations before you file.
Keep it on your phone: open legimatch.com in Safari or Chrome, tap Share or the menu, then “Add to Home Screen”. LegiMatch opens like an app, ready for a quick look-up in court or between meetings.

Questions attorneys ask
Is LegiMatch legal advice?+
No. LegiMatch is a research tool for licensed attorneys. It shows past court decisions, their outcomes, and why they're similar to your facts. It never recommends strategy or predicts outcomes. You verify and decide.
Can the AI invent cases?+
Search results can't include invented cases: every result is a real decision stored in our database, with a link to its text, and a final check drops anything that isn't in the database. The AI writes explanations, and like any summary those can be wrong, so read the opinion before you rely on it.
What does the match % mean?+
It's a transparent similarity score: facts 40%, legal issues 30%, statutes 15%, jurisdiction 10%, recency 5%; in an AI search, Claude's similarity rating counts for half. You can see every part and re-weight it. It is not a probability of winning.
Where does the case law come from?+
Public-domain US court opinions from state appellate courts, federal district, bankruptcy and appellate courts, and the US Supreme Court, updated daily. We only use the courts' own text, never publisher headnotes.
Is my client's information safe?+
Uploads are encrypted, stored on US servers and never used to train AI, and you can delete them any time or set auto-delete. Emails, phone numbers and SSNs are redacted automatically before processing. See the Security page for details.
How do AI credits work?+
Research is unlimited on every plan. Each plan includes monthly AI credits per user: an AI-powered search uses 1 (AI ranking plus written explanations) and Deep Analysis uses 5. When your AI credits run out, research keeps working with standard matching until they renew, or you can buy a top-up; top-ups expire with your plan period. Brief checks, keyword search and analyzing your matter never use credits.
Does LegiMatch tell me if a case is still good law?+
It helps, but it isn't a full citator. Decisions show a red, yellow or green flag based on how later decisions in our database treat it (overruled, reversed, criticized, followed…), with the exact sentence. Brief check runs the same check across every citation in your brief, plus case-name, quote and pin-cite checks, and builds your table of authorities. Coverage is growing; always verify before filing.
What is unlimited?+
Fact-matched research (standard matching once your AI credits are used), brief checks with a table of authorities, keyword (terms-and-connectors) search, reading and downloading opinions, alerts, statute pages, judge analytics, matters, notes and highlights, and the Research Librarian. AI credits are used only for AI-powered searches (1) and Deep Analysis (5). Unlimited means normal use by one attorney; automated or shared use isn't allowed. The statute finder and keyword search stay free even after a trial ends.
Does it work with Microsoft Word?+
Yes. The Word add-in checks the citations in the document you're drafting and inserts Bluebook citations at the cursor.
Is there support if I get stuck?+
The Research Librarian answers research and how-to questions 24/7 (it never gives legal advice), and one click hands any conversation to a person on our team, who replies in the app.
Can I share my account?+
Each seat is for one attorney. An account can be signed in on two devices at a time (for example, laptop and phone). Signing in on a third device signs out the oldest one.
Is there an annual plan?+
Yes. Annual billing costs 10 months' price for 12 months (2 months free), and you still get your AI credits every month.
Can I cancel, and do you give refunds?+
Yes. Cancel any time in Settings → Plan & billing: you won't be charged again and you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for. Because you can try LegiMatch free for 14 days first, payments are non-refundable, except for billing errors or a technical problem on our side. Asking for a refund also cancels your next renewal. See the Refund Policy.
