LegiMatch vs Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law, vLex, Harvey, Paxton and BriefCatch - compared on tested numbers
By LegiMatch Research Team · Published October 21, 2026 · 7 min read
Short answer: Westlaw and Lexis are the industry's research platforms, with the standard citators (KeyCite and Shepard's), brief checkers (Quick Check and Brief Analysis) and Word add-ins. LegiMatch covers the same daily work - checking a brief and finding cases - in one plan with a public price ($99 a month, or $149 per user), a 14-day trial with only an email, and something neither publishes: measured accuracy. In 21 blind test rounds on 1,635 real documents, LegiMatch caught 98.6% of planted case-citation mistakes in its latest rounds and called none of 5,185 real citations nonexistent; its similar-case search found the exact original decision in the top 10 in 85% of a published 80-case test.

What each has measured and published
None of Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law or vLex publishes an accuracy rate for its brief checker or its fact-based case search. The best-known independent study, by Stanford's RegLab (published 2024, journal version 2025), found that AI legal research tools from both vendors gave incorrect or misgrounded answers in roughly 17% to 33% of its test questions; it tested research answers from 2024 versions, not citation checking, so it says little about today's brief checkers.
LegiMatch publishes its own tests and how they were run, so anyone can repeat them:
| Test | Result |
|---|---|
| Planted case-citation mistakes caught (latest 2 rounds, 200 court decisions) | 1,397 of 1,417 (98.6%) |
| Real citations wrongly called nonexistent (same rounds) | 0 of 5,185 |
| All 21 blind rounds, before and after fixes | 10,444 of 10,741 (97.2%); 11 of 43,046 real citations called nonexistent |
| Statute changed to another real section (AI check on) | 31 of 35 |
| Statute changed to a section that doesn't exist | 18 of 19 |
| Similar-case search: exact original in top 10 (80 rewritten decisions) | 68 of 80 (85%) |
| Source of real quotations found | 39 of 40 |

Where each is stronger
Westlaw, Lexis and Bloomberg Law
- The standard citators. KeyCite and Shepard's are what courts and firms rely on for later treatment.
- Mature workflows for large firms, with enterprise support.
LegiMatch
- Measured and published accuracy, re-tested on new documents.
- A statute-meaning check: a real section cited for the wrong point (§ 2612 where § 2615 was meant) is flagged, with the nearby section that fits.
- One plan, public price: brief checking, similar-case search, quotation search and the Word add-in together.
- An easy trial: 14 days with an email - no phone, address, card or sales call.
How to choose
- You need a full editorial citator and firm-wide enterprise tools: Westlaw or Lexis.
- You want to check briefs and find cases with a known accuracy, at a published price: try LegiMatch for 14 days.
- Many lawyers use both: a research platform for depth, and a fast checker before filing.
Frequently asked questions
Does LegiMatch replace Westlaw or Lexis?
For checking briefs and finding cases from facts, many small firms use it on its own. For a full editorial citator, Westlaw and Lexis go further.
Why don't Westlaw and Lexis publish accuracy numbers?
We don't know; neither does. Ask any vendor for its method and numbers before you buy, and run the same test on a brief you know well.
Do these tools replace reading the cases?
No. They catch wrong and fake citations and misquotations; whether a case supports your argument still needs a lawyer's reading.
