The Research Librarian - a free research assistant inside LegiMatch
By LegiMatch Research Team · Published October 15, 2026 · 3 min read
Short answer: the Research Librarian is a chat assistant in every LegiMatch account. It's included with every plan and the free trial, and uses no AI credits. Ask a short question and it finds court decisions, statute sections or help articles in the LegiMatch library and links each one so you can read it. It never gives legal advice, and it can hand the conversation to a person on our team.
What you can ask it
| You type | What it does |
|---|---|
| "Texas cases where a shopper slipped on a spill" | Searches the case library and lists matching decisions with outcome and a link |
| "constructive notice w/s spill" | Runs the same search with terms and connectors, as you would on Westlaw or Lexis |
| "Which Texas law covers keeping a security deposit?" | Finds official statute sections that may be relevant, such as Tex. Prop. Code § 92.104 |
| "What does 42 U.S.C. § 1983 say?" | Shows the official heading and text of that section and how many decisions cite it |
| "Is 81 S.W.3d 812 still good law?" | Shows the decision and any negative treatment recorded in our library |
| "How do I add a case to a matter?" | Answers from the help centre |
| "Talk to a person" | Passes the conversation to our support team, who reply in the app |
What it does not do
- No legal advice. It finds and describes authority. It does not say what you should do, predict an outcome, or tell you which argument will win. Ask "should I…" and it says so plainly.
- No invented cases. Every case and statute it shows comes from the LegiMatch library and links to the full text.
- No guessing about coverage. If something isn't in the library, it says so. That doesn't mean the authority doesn't exist.
Librarian or fact research?
| Research Librarian | Fact research ("New research") | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Quick questions, statutes, how-to help | Finding precedent for a specific client matter |
| What you give it | A short question | A fact summary, complaint or brief |
| What you get | Up to 5 linked results per answer | Ranked decisions with a match score broken into facts, issues, statutes, jurisdiction and recency |
| Cost | Free | Unlimited; 1 AI credit for an AI-powered search (5 for Deep Analysis) |
Keep it on your phone
Open legimatch.com in Safari or Chrome and choose Add to Home Screen. LegiMatch then opens like an app, handy for a quick look-up in court or between meetings.
Your information
Conversations are stored encrypted and you can delete them. Like the rest of LegiMatch, nothing you type is used to train AI models. As with any research tool, you don't need client names to ask a research question.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Research Librarian use AI credits?
No. It's included with every plan and the 14-day free trial and uses no AI credits. There is a daily message limit to keep the service fair for everyone.
Can the Research Librarian give legal advice?
No. It finds cases, statutes and help articles and links them so you can read and verify them. Decisions about a client's matter stay with the lawyer.
Can I talk to a real person?
Yes. Choose "Talk to a person" in the chat and a member of our team replies in the app.
Does it make up citations?
It only shows cases and statute sections that exist in the LegiMatch library, each with a link to the full text. Always read the authority before you rely on it.
