Find the law for a question (statutes)
Open Statutes and use Find the law for a question: describe the topic in plain words (for example "landlord keeping a tenant's security deposit"), choose a state, the U.S. Code or both, and press Find sections.
- You see the official sections that may be relevant: citation, the government's own heading, its place in the code and the start of the text.
- Open a section for the full official text, a link to the official source, and the decisions in our library that cite it.
- Coverage: the United States Code and official state codes (including every Texas and California code), refreshed monthly from the official publishers. The state list in Statutes shows every state available, and more are added as their official sources are loaded.
- You can also ask the Research Librarian, e.g. "Which Texas law covers security deposits?"
It shows official text only, never legal advice: whether a section applies depends on the facts, effective dates and later amendments and decisions.
